The banks of the River Lagan was the unlikely venue for a beach volleyball tournament on Sunday 26th August.

Two sand courts were built in Cutters Wharf car park, and sunshine was imported from Bondi Beach to provide the ideal setting for this new charity event, which was sponsored by Budweiser and the Big Buzz magazine.

Twelve teams competed in the inaugural tournament, representing Belfast Rowing Club, Bell Recruitment, Big Buzz, Citybeat, Dimex (2 teams), Flagship Media (2 teams), The Kremlin, Malone Landscapes, Parity, and Sunday World.

“I’ve lost a nail!”

Without question, the most colourful – and most loudly supported – team was Titti’s Tossers from The Kremlin. Some volleyball purists may have wondered what was happening to their beautiful game, but there was no doubting the entertainment value – both on and off the court.

There may not have been many textbook 3-touch rallies, but who cares when the team builds sandcastles, uses their own players to “rake” the sand, and squeals “I’ve lost a nail!” in the middle of the rally, while the cheerleaders execute their well-rehearsed routines beside the court?

Many of the players were new to volleyball, but their enthusiasm and natural competitiveness more than compensated for any lack of experience.

Semi-finals

The first semi-final featured Citybeat and Flagship Media 2. Both teams had emerged unbeaten from the group phase. As expected, this was a keenly contested match, which Citybeat won 25-17.

The second semi-final was between Bell Boozers and Sick as a Parity. This was a repeat of an earlier group match. Despite the great efforts of American import Cindy, Bell Boozers were unable to avenge their defeat. For the record, it was definitely NOT a double touch!

The final

As the final started between Citybeat and Sick as a Parity, the clouds had gathered, and the possibility of rain threatened to spoil the day.

Citybeat started well, building up an early lead. The sun broke through the clouds midway through the match, which didn’t help Sick as a Parity. Tip for next year – everyone must bring shades!

Although Sick as a Parity played some attractive volleyball, the damage had already been done and they were unable to close the gap as Citybeat ran out as worthy winners 25-19.

The magnificent trophy, donated by Big Buzz, was presented to Citybeat captain Stan Cunningham by Angela McCarthy, the current Miss Northern Ireland, and a key member of Belfast City Ladies team.

Congratulations

This is the first year of this tournament, and it is intended that it will be repeated for the next few years. My thanks go to all of the NIVA volunteers who helped make the day such a success.

Congratulations to the victorious Citybeat team – Stan Cunningham (capt.), Nicky Fullerton, Rosie Hagan, Claire Savage and Colin Wilson.

See you all again next year!
